Why does negative pressure occur in residential buildings?

Because the design of buildings didn't consider ventilation, current buildings have centralized water supply and drainage, and centralized smoke exhaust. Every household has a range hood and bathroom exhaust fan as standard equipment, and their power is increasing. Currently, the power of range hoods from brands such as Boss and Fotile reaches 1000Pa, with Meida's under-range hoods even higher. As the airtightness of doors and windows improves, the indoor-outdoor isolation also gets better. Therefore, when doors and windows are closed (especially in the spring, autumn, and winter in the north and summer in the south), negative pressure is immediately generated when the range hood is turned on.

Because the ventilation function was not considered during the construction of buildings, current buildings have centralized water supply and drainage, and centralized smoke exhaust ducts. Every household has an exhaust hood and bathroom ventilation fan as standard, and their power is increasing. Currently, the power of exhaust hoods from brands such as Boss and Fotile on the market reaches 1000Pa, and the Meida under-range exhaust hood is even more powerful. As the airtightness of doors and windows gradually improves, the indoor-outdoor insulation also gets better. Therefore, when doors and windows are closed (especially in spring, autumn, and winter in the north and summer in the south), the moment the exhaust hood starts, negative pressure is immediately generated. Due to the principle of atmospheric pressure, the indoor and outdoor air pressure needs to balance. With good airtightness of doors and windows, it is difficult for air to enter through the gaps, or only a small amount enters. The continuous negative pressure can only draw air from the sewer pipes. Since the sewer pipes in all buildings are interconnected and connected to outdoor drainage wells, a large amount of gas enters the room to supplement the negative pressure through this only high-flow channel. This not only brings odors but also spreads bacteria and viruses. At the beginning of the year, there were cases in Wuhan where the virus spread in a concentrated isolation area, even though residents did not leave their homes. Experts analyzed that this was caused by backflow of air from the sewer pipes, which was actually caused by negative pressure. When cooking at home and the exhaust hood is operating, negative pressure is generated indoors, and viruses enter the room through the sewer pipes, causing the spread of the virus.
