Why does negative pressure occur in residential buildings?
Because the construction of buildings did not consider the ventilation function, current buildings have centralized water supply and drainage, and smoke ducts for centralized smoke exhaust. Every household is equipped with range hoods and bathroom exhaust fans, and their power is increasing. Currently, the power of range hoods from brands such as Boss and Fotile on the market has reached 1000Pa, and the Meida bottom exhaust is even greater. As the airtightness of doors and windows gradually improves, the indoor and outdoor isolation also becomes better. Therefore, when doors and windows are closed (especially in the spring, autumn, and winter seasons in the north and summer in the south), the moment the range hood is turned on, negative pressure is immediately generated. Due to the principle of atmospheric pressure, indoor and outdoor air pressure needs to be balanced. With good airtightness of doors and windows, it is difficult for gas to enter through the gaps, or only a small amount can enter. Sustained negative pressure can only draw air from the sewer pipes. Since all building sewer pipes are interconnected and connected to outdoor drainage wells, a large amount of gas enters the room to compensate for the negative pressure through this unique high-flow channel. This not only brings odors but also spreads bacteria and viruses. At the beginning of the year, there were cases in Wuhan where the virus spread in a concentrated isolation area, even though residents did not leave their homes. Experts analyzed that this was caused by backflow of air from the sewer pipes, which is essentially caused by negative pressure. This is because when the range hood is working while cooking at home, negative pressure is generated indoors, allowing viruses to enter the room from the sewer pipes, causing the spread of the virus.
